Established in 1996 by the late Brian Mulligan, Mulligans Funeral and Monumental Services Ltd has been a trusted name in funeral care for over 25 years. Brian, after many years of working for a large corporate funeral provider, saw a need for a more personal and compassionate service. With this vision, he opened the first funeral home in Clayton, Manchester, laying the foundation for what would become a family-run business known for its compassion, respect, and professionalism.

What began as a small, independent funeral home has grown and evolved, serving the local communities of Manchester and Stockport with services that reflect the changing needs of the families we care for. Just as an acorn grows into a mighty oak, Mulligans has flourished over the years, expanding from its traditional funeral offerings to include a wide range of services, recognising that every life deserves to be honoured in a way that is personal and unique. The acorn, which we have adopted as the symbol of our direct cremation services, represents growth, strength, and the enduring legacy of life. It reflects our belief that even the simplest of beginnings can lead to something lasting and meaningful.

Now led by Karen, Brian’s daughter, the company has continued to grow while maintaining the same commitment to care that it was built on. Karen, along with her team of highly experienced funeral directors—each with decades of experience—has expanded Mulligans' services to include not only traditional funerals but also direct cremation, which has become an increasingly popular choice for families seeking simplicity and affordability, without compromising on dignity.

At Mulligans, we believe that even a straightforward direct cremation can be personal. Our direct cremation services stand out by offering families the opportunity to add personal touches, such as choosing a special piece of music, selecting the clothing for their loved one, or arranging a webcast of the committal. Although attendance at the committal itself is not possible with direct cremation, the webcast ensures that family and friends can still share in the moment, even from afar.

For those who seek a more personal farewell, we offer options such as private chapel visits, where family and friends can spend time with their loved one in an intimate setting before the cremation. Additionally, we provide families with keepsakes such as memorial jewellery, ashes caskets, and other personalised mementos to help them create lasting tributes.

As a family-owned and operated business, we have always placed the needs of the families we serve at the heart of everything we do. Our team of experienced funeral directors works closely with families to provide services that are flexible, personal, and respectful. We recognise that direct cremation may be the right option for some, while others may need more involvement in saying farewell. Regardless of your choice, we are committed to ensuring that every farewell reflects the wishes and values of your loved one.

Mulligans continues to bridge the gap between affordability and personalisation, allowing families to say goodbye in a way that feels right for them. Whether you prefer a simple, direct cremation or would like to add personal elements to make it more meaningful, we are here to support you through every step of the process.

From our early beginnings in Clayton to our expansion across Manchester and Stockport, we have remained committed to the community and the families we serve. Our growth into offering specialised direct cremation services, represented by the acorn symbol, reflects our understanding of modern funeral choices, without ever losing sight of the care, dignity, and personalisation that has been the cornerstone of our service for over 25 years.

Meet Oakley – The Heart of Mulligans Funeral Service

At Mulligans Funeral & Monumental Services Ltd, we understand that funerals are more than just a service—they are a tribute to a unique life. To represent this, we are proud to introduce Oakley, our friendly and compassionate acorn mascot. Oakley embodies the values at the heart of what we do: care, dignity, and respect for every family we serve.

What Oakley Represents

Oakley isn’t just an acorn—he’s a symbol of growth, remembrance, and support during life’s most difficult moments. The acorn represents life’s journey, with its ability to grow from a small seed into something strong and enduring, much like the impact of a loved one’s legacy.

Oakley’s warm and professional presence reflects the way Mulligans approaches every service, helping families honour their loved ones with care and personalisation, whether through direct cremation or traditional funerals. His role is to guide and reassure families, showing them that even in simplicity, dignity and respect are at the forefront.

Whether you’re planning ahead or in need of immediate support, Oakley and the team at Mulligans are here to make sure your loved one’s farewell is handled with the utmost respect and compassion.
